Thanks to the people of Upacchi, for their trust, openness, and generosity in allowing this project to take shape.
Upacchi is a small community in the hills near Arezzo, in the mountains of Tuscany. The village is made of old stone houses that once stood abandoned, left behind by the farmers who had worked the surrounding land. In 1990, people arrived with the idea of creating a new kind of community: a place where they could live a collective lifestyle. Over the years, the ruined houses were rebuilt, and the village slowly came back to life.
Children play outside, doors stay unlocked, families tend small plots of land, and neighbours gather in the evenings at Paradiso, the village’s communal space. Upacchi is connected to the contemporary world through the same technology and connectivity as anywhere else, yet its sense of belonging feels different.
The images do not try to explain the village completely, but stay close to its atmosphere, accompanied by short interview fragments that share residents’ memories and perspectives.
